Introduction
China is racing ahead with plans to make renewables its main source of electricity while the US is going in the opposite direction. Last April, Xi Jinping, president of the People’s Republic of China, said in a speech that in the past five years, China has built “the world’s largest and most complete new energy industry chain.” That was no idle boast. While much of the focus has been on solar, China is also a leader in both. China is advancing a nearly 1.3 terawatt (TW) pipeline of utility-scale solar and wind capacity, leading the global effort in renewable energy buildout. This is in addition to China’s already operating 1.4 TW of solar and wind capacity, nearly 26% of which (357 gigawatts (GW)) came online in 2024. China leads the world in deployment of solar power, with more than one-third of global capacity. China has led the world in solar power deployment every year since 2015. 46 In 2021, 53 GW of solar power capacity was added in China—40% of the global total. 47 At year end, total solar power capacity.
