Introduction
According to new research, “ The first evidence of a take-off in solar in Africa ” by energy think tank Ember, in the 12 months ending June 2025, Africa imported 15,032 MW of solar panels from China —a 60% jump from the previous year. Africa is slowly stepping into the solar spotlight. According to the Africa Solar Industry Association (AFSIA) in 2024, the continent added 2.5 GW of new capacity, taking the total installed solar to 19.2 GWp. Yet, even with this growth, the divide between Africa and the rest of the world is still. Earlier this week, the Egyptian government signed a $1.8 billion renewable energy deal with Norwegian developer Scatec and China’s Sungrow. The project includes a solar energy plant, a four-gigawatt-hour battery storage system, and a Sungrow manufacturing facility for energy storage batteries at. According to a new analysis of China’s solar panel exports data from energy think tank Ember, solar panel imports into the continent jumped 60% in the 12 months through June 2025, setting a record that could reshape electricity systems in many countries. In that period, Africa imported 15,032. But in May this year, a quiet revolution took place. African nations imported a record 1.57 gigawatts (GW) of solar panels from China in a single month—the strongest signal yet that the continent is embracing the sun as its most abundant resource. What makes this story remarkable is not just the. Chinese solar equipment has been flooding African markets, partly as a ripple effect of the US-China trade war. It's one of several factors helping the continent gain traction with electrification. Solar power is widely recognized as an excellent solution for Africa. Sunlight is abundant, economies. Solar panel imports into Africa rose by a record 60 per cent in the 12 months to June 2025 according to a new analysis of China’s solar panel exports, indicating a steady demand for clean energy in the world's least connected region. The data by international energy think tank Ember, show that.
