Introduction
This document provides criteria for Pumped Storage Hydro-Electric project owners to assess their facilities and programs against. This document specifically focuses on water level control and management. This study is a resource assessment to identify locations throughout Reclamation’s service area where a pumped storage project may be technically, environmentally and economically viable and could contribute to meeting renewable energy objectives in the future. It represents a preliminary screening. The Commission has authorized a total of 24 pumped storage projects that are constructed and in operation, with a total installed capacity of over 16,500 megawatts. Most of these projects were authorized more than 30 years ago. To view maps illustrating the location and capacity of existing and. bility to assure grid resilience. The combination of increasing variable renewable resources and the retirement of fossil fueled dispatchable capacity makes hydropower and pumped storage the unique proven technology that can provide cleaaand long duration energy storage. This guide will enable utilities to accurately screen potential sites to determine which candidates deserve more-detailed studies.
