How did Norway gain jurisdiction over Svalbard?

After centuries of being regarded as terra nullius, Norway gained jurisdiction over Svalbard through the Svalbard Treaty of 1920. The Svalbard Treaty also granted rights to nationals of other states, most significantly the right to undertake economic activity on equal footing.

How does the Svalbard Treaty affect Norway?

The Svalbard Treaty does not specify how Norway should govern or administer the archipelago. Norwegian sovereignty over the islands is exercised primarily through the office of the Governor (Sysselmann), a figure who is appointed by the Norwegian Council of State and reports to the Norwegian Ministry of Justice.
