In 2020, the reformation and renaming of the Company (commonly known then as Kiribati Solar Energy Company) was conducted with the core objective is to broaden its scope in providing services with renewable energy including solar energy, wave energy, wind energy and other RE technologies that is applicable in Kiribati.

Initially, the project was implemented by the Kiribati Solar Energy Company (KSEC) in January 2011. The project is implemented by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) based in Fiji and executed the by EPU. The KIIREP Committee coordinates the project activities.

In the feasibility study report produced by Mr. Hassan, the results determined that wind energy is feasible in Kiritimati Island with an average wind speed of 7.5 m/s. The project outcome identified the wind turbine specification suitable and appropriate for Kiritimati Island to generate power.
