Introduction
While decisions carried out by federal regulators and regional market operators have an impact on state energy storage policy, state policymakers--and state legislators in particular--are instrumental in enacting policies that remove barriers to adoption and encourage . But as states around the country clean up their electricity grids with renewable power, there are concerns that renewables will be sufficiently reliable. For example, rooftop solar panels can help power homes and businesses, but without the ability to store the energy they’re left in the dark if. As the grid transitions away from traditional fossil fuels towards intermittent renewable resources, energy storage becomes an important asset for energy management, in order to maintain grid reliability and price certainty, and to ensure continued supplies of power through peak demand periods. Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) has adopted a Statewide Solar for All program that will significantly spur the development of more solar and retail energy storage projects in New York State. Going forward, the Statewide Solar for All. Illinois took a major step forward today as Governor JB Pritzker signed the 2025 Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act, expanding battery storage and advancing a statewide virtual power plant program. While energy policy chaos in Washington, DC grabs the spotlight, SEIA delivered meaningful. We expect 63 gigawatts (GW) of new utility-scale electric-generating capacity to be added to the U.S. power grid in 2025 in our latest Preliminary Monthly Electric Generator Inventory report. This amount represents an almost 30% increase from 2024 when 48.6 GW of capacity was installed, the largest. Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the state’s grid operator, is responsible for ensuring that the state has enough power supply to meet demand, but Winter Storm Uri caused unexpectedly high demand and low supply. Most of the time, states plan to have enough power for when the highest.
