Bolivia and China have signed an agreement for the extraction of lithium from the South American country. The service contract, worth US$1.03 billion, will enable the development of the final engineering design, construction and operation of a plant that will produce 10,000 tons of battery-grade lithium carbonate per year.

The recent $1bn deal with Chinese consortium CBC will see two direct lithium extraction plants built in the Uyuni salt flat. Lithium battery producer CATL is a subsidiary of CBC. The Bolivian government will take a 51% stake in the project, with YLB revealing that the two plants together are intended to produce 35,000 tons of lithium a year.
