Introduction
Solar installation in Cuba:Cuba is boosting the use of photovoltaic solar energy and carrying out two projects to add 1,000 megawatts to the national power grid by 20261.There are currently 67 photovoltaic farms in Cuba, with another 13 under construction, contributing about 1.15% of overall energy consumption2.The first solar farm opened in Cantarrana in 2013, and the Santa Teresa solar plant near Guantanamo has recently started operating3. Cuba is reportedly boosting the use of photovoltaic solar energy, and is carrying out two projects since early 2024 to add 1,000 megawatts in two years to the national power grid, looking at adding the same amount. Currently, there are 67 photovoltaic farms in Cuba, with another 13 under construction, which will add about 42 MW to the existing installed power capacity. At present, photovoltaic generation contributes about. In 2013 Cuba’s first solar farm opened in Cantarrana, near Cienfuegos, with a capacity of 2.6 MWp. The Santa Teresa solar plant (4.5 MWp capacity) near the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo has started operating.

Where are the solar panels made in Cuba?
The solar panels used in the project are partly produced by the Cuban Electronic Industry -70 percent of all the solar panels were assembled in Pinar del Río, and 100 percent were installed by the Copextel company ran by the Ministry of Computer Science and Communications (MIC).
How much solar energy is installed in Cuba?
The installed solar energy generating capacity in Cuba is around 3 megawatts, or 0.07 % of the total installed capacity. And there are several projects underway to increase this percentage, although costs remain a serious obstacle. Increase in energy production from solar devises in Cuba since 2001:
How many photovoltaic farms are there in Cuba?
Photovoltaic. Currently, there are 67 photovoltaic farms in Cuba, with another 13 under construction, which will add about 42 MW to the existing installed power capacity. At present, photovoltaic generation contributes about 1.15% of the overall energy consumption in Cuba, with a total capacity of 157 MW.
Where is the first bioelectric plant erected in Cuba?
Recently, the first bioelectric erected in Cuba, which is located adjacent to Ciro Redondo sugar mill in Ciego de Ávila province, was synchronized to the national grid. It’s a 60-MW biomass-fired power plant with two boilers capable of consuming about 2,100 tons of bagasse and 1,200–1,500 tons of marabou every day.
How will bioelectrics impact the environment in Cuba?
The bioelectrics program in Cuba, besides impacting definitively in the sugar production process and contributing clean power to the country’s energy mix, will also impact positively in the environment, thus promoting access to secure, sustainable, and modern renewable energy.
How many wind farms are there in Cuba?
Wind. Today, there are four wind farms in Cuba constructed experimentally with an overall capacity of 11.5 MW, while there are 13 new projects under different phases of execution (Figure 4). Among the projects being implemented, three have government investment, nine have foreign investment, and one is still being negotiated.
