Who is CAES holdings?
CAES Holdings is one of the businesses created by Advent International when it acquired UK-based defence company Cobham in 2020 in a £4bn ($5.6bn) takeover. At the time, Advent expressed its “long term commitment to investing in the UK” through the deal.
What is CAES technology?
CAES technology involves storing compressed ambient air in an underground cavern. When electricity is required, the pressurised air is heated and expanded in an expansion turbine driving a generator for power production.
How will the CAES project help Northern Ireland?
The CAES project will help SONI, the Northern Ireland electricity transmission system operator, to perform grid balancing functions. Gaelectric also claims that the project will help Northern Ireland to protect itself from increased power prices and increase its energy security.
How does CAES work?
This excess electricity is transformed into highly pressurized compressed air, stashed away for future use. This compressed air is unleashed into turbine generators and reconverted into electricity when needed. CAES operates seamlessly year-round, regardless of weather conditions or the time of day.
Why did Honeywell buy CAES?

How do CAES systems tackle thermal challenges?
CAES systems tackle this thermal challenge through three distinct approaches: Adiabatic energy storage systems retain and release the heat generated during air compression during decompression. The stored heat can be held in solids like concrete or fluids like oils or molten salt.
