Volterra energy group was founded in 2017 as a renewable energy development and investment management group focusing in solar, wind, small hydro, energy storages, and waste-to-energy technologies. Since 2017 Volterra developed solar stations with total installed capacity about 200 MW.
Does Djibouti have electricity?
Djibouti has vast untapped renewable energy sources, namely geothermal, solar, and wind. The peak annual demand in 2014 was about 90 MW but is expected that it will grow to about 300 MW by around 2020. Electricity supply services are provided through the vertically integrated utility Electricité de Djibouti (EDD).
What happened to Volterra Energy Group?
Since 2017 Volterra developed solar stations with total installed capacity about 200 MW. In 2020 Volterra energy group sold the biggest part of its solar portfolio and continues its activities now as an investment company. We focused on sustainable business activity and investing in renewable energy, agricultural, ecological and space projects.

Djibouti’s substantial potential for geothermal electricity generation, along with its rising capacity to produce energy from wind and solar power plants, should help the country reach its goals in coming years. In addition to the growing need for generation capacity, the expansion of renewable energy is key for Djibouti to diversify its economy.
Will Djibouti become the first African country to meet 100% electricity demand?
The authorities have announced plans to transform Djibouti into the first African country to fulfil 100% of its electricity demand from clean energy sources by the close of the plan in 2035. The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources formulates policies for the sector and regulates the electricity market.
Why did Djibouti open up electricity production to independent operators?
For the government, the aim was to open up electricity production to independent operators so as to achieve energy independence as soon as possible. It should be noted that the state-owned company Électricité de Djibouti retains a monopoly on the transmission and distribution of electricity. The project was developed by Red Sea Power (RSP).
